Scicli: in the hearth of baroque

Travelling from Ragusa or Modica, wonderful Scicli appears almost suddenly after a bend in the road. The town is situated in a valley at the foot of limestone rocks formations which seem to protect it, and the blue Mediterranean Sea on the horizon completes the view.

The caves

Until 50 years ago the Scicli’s residents lived in the so-called “chiafure”, caves carved into the rock. Today three of these caves, after undergoing careful restoration, have become an attractive lodging alternative where it is possible to experience an extraordinary adventure, which includes the possibility of visiting Scicli (a city part of the UNESCO world heritage sites) and the surrounding area, a pearl of Sicilian baroque (Modica, Ragusa, Caltagirone, and Noto).

The three caves have been decorated with style and originality of Baroque and Arabian influence. They are composed as follows:

  • “Lemons” Cave: The first cave consists of a section built in the stone where the kitchen and a small living room area are located. A short staircase with three steps provides access to the section carved into the rock that hosts the sleeping quarters. In this area there are another small living room area with a sofa bed, a bedroom with a queen size bed, a single bedroom and a bathroom.
  • “Black Pepper” Cave: It is possible to access the central cave directly from the terrace surrounded by local flowers and plants and from which it’s possible to enjoy a spectacular view of the old part of town. The view of the city becomes more striking at dusk when the many city lights are turned on and the place resemble a fairytale town. This unit consists of a Moroccan style living room, two bedrooms (a double and a single) and a bathroom.
  • “Ginger” Cave: This unit can be accessed through a glass door which brings to a spacious sun-filled kitchen with stove, fridge, oven, washing machine and kitchen utensils).Three steps provide access to the section carved into the rock that hosts the sleeping quarters. In this area there are another small living room area with a sofa bed and TV, a bedroom with a queen size bed, a single bedroom and a bathroom.
